Atri
Atri rises in the outstanding position, on a clayey hill, surrounded by other hills,
that from one side degrade towards the sea and from other side join the mountains.
But particularity of the view round Atri is because of "
calanchi", erosions due
to rain water on the clay, that cause on the sides of hills splits, hollows, spaced
out by streams and little lakes, and because of particular vegetation, composed
of capers, wild artichokes, tamarisks, brooms and wild gladiolus. In the town the
beauty of Roman style Cathedral strikes you, with a simple and harmonious facade,
with 3 portals.Inside, 3 naves are separated by 8 pillars and the walls are enriched
by paintings of
Andrea Delitio, thata represent scenes of New Testament and of the
life of Jesus and Maria. Nearby in the Duomo raises fifteenth - century church -
steeple, high 55 m.
From the other artistic monuments of
Atri there are:
church of S.Agostino and
of
S. Domenico,
church of S. Francesco and fourteenth - century city - council building,
that was the seat of the duke of Acquaviva, that dominated Atri frome the end of
XIV till XVIII centuries. Atri has a very ancient past, as prove caves that have
a place in south part of the town. The place is made of galleries and caves connected
between them, walls are partially plastered, with rounded off angles with a "
Opus
signinum", make you think about a big cistern for the harvest and preservation of
water of the Roman epoch.
