A wine-growing was practised in Abruzzo from the ancient times, as prove Plinio il Vecchio, that in his books speaks about “Vinam Trebulanum”. The production of wine than handed down for a centuries reached our days with actual 36 000 hectares of vineyard. Vineyard have place especially in the province of Chieti, but the province of Teramo stands out for a quality of it’s products.
The most important producers of wine of the place, that spreads in the hills of Colonnella, Controguerra, Corropoli and Torano, were reunited in 1996 and had founded “la Denominazione di Origine Controllata” (D.O.C.) for some typologies of wine producted in this territory. In the base of this production there are always “il Montepulciano” and “il Trebbiano d’Abruzzo”, besides this wines there is sparkling wine, made of Trebbiano grapes (60 % ) united to Chardonnay, Verdicchio, Pecorino, il Novello, il white “passito” and il red “passito” grapes.
Itinerary to visit the most important wine – shops of the place have a beginning at Colonnella, Renaissance town, where you can admire a wonderfull view to Val Vibrata and also to Valley of Tronto,and where you can taste whether wines of social wine – shop of Colonnella, whether wines of Lepore wine – shop,where we can remember il Montepulciano D’Abruzzo Riserva Luigi Lepore.
Then we go on for Controguerra, with it’s ancient medieval fortified tower, where , on the North side of Tronto, there is Camillo Montori private concern, with the most famous labels like “Leneo Moro”, “Leneo D’Oro” e “Poderi di Fonte Cupa”. Always in the surroundings of Controguerra there is a social wine – shop of Illuminati, one of the most ancient of the place, that has a production of a million of bottles.
Passing for Nereto we arrive to Torano Nuovo where, form various wine – shops stands out the Barone Pietro Cornacchia wine – shop, with vineyards “a tendone” and in rows, and with a production that for 85 % is esported abroad, mainly to United States, Nord Europe, Japan and New Zeland.
